Before she got the party started Saturday night, pop star Pink had her eye on Niagara Falls.

“It’s my second time here,” said one of the top-selling female singers of the past decade. “I went on the Maid of the Mist last time. I was considering the barrel this time.”

With hits like So What and Trouble, the 30-year-old Pink — real name, Alecia Moore — was in town for the grand opening of husband Carey Hart’s first Canadian location of his Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. chain. The couple were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered at a VIP reception at Margaritaville.

Best known as a motocross star and cast member of The Surreal Life, Hart opened his first tattoo shop with former business partner John Huntington in 2004 at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. The shop was the subject of the A&E reality show Inked.

He has been married to Pink since 2006.

The red carpet event was attended by tattoo artists, Inked stars and the pop band Stereos, but it was Pink most people were waiting for. Though she wasn’t scheduled to perform or sign autographs, several fans crammed Margaritaville — and even got drenched by the rain outside — just for a glimpse.

After some brief interviews with the media, including The Niagara Falls Review, ET Canada and MuchMusic, she was quickly whisked upstairs for the VIP party, where a huge section was roped off from the public.

Several people thought their VIP ticket, which cost $125 each, would get them a chance to meet the singer, but security (including some Niagara Regional Police officers) ensured no one got near her.

“I’m not really a Pink fan … but with the price of the ticket, we thought we’d have access other people wouldn’t,” said local publicist Chris Dabrowski, who wanted to pitch the singer an idea involving a charitable sponsorship. He ended up writing the proposal on a piece of paper for staff to hand to her.

Welland’s Mike Alfieri, co-owner of the Fallsview Boulevard shop, was thrilled to have Pink in the house, but admits the extra security added unwanted stress to the event. He apologized to several fans who expected to meet her.

“She came here to support her husband,” he said. “It’s good, but look at all the people … I had to break off that VIP area.

“Other than that, we had a killer day today. This was probably one of their best grand openings.”

Even one of Alfieri’s relatives was kept behind the rope, at least 30 feet away from Hart and Pink.

“I just want to get a picture of them both,” she said.

The grand opening was a day-long event, with a portion of Fallsview Boulevard closed to accommodate skateboard and motocross ramps. After the ribbon- cutting at noon, Hart signed autographs for hundreds of fans inside the posh tattoo shop.

“Here we are about eight months after this whole thing started,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

Pink, injured during a concert in Germany last month when she slammed into a steel barricade, showed no ill effects during her Falls trip.

“I’m good … though (Carey) doesn’t give me much sympathy,” she said with a laugh.

“She takes it like a champ,” added Hart.

American audiences may think of Pink mainly as the singer who sang upside down while hanging from the ceiling at the Grammy’s, but the 30-year-old pop singer is a major hit overseas. Her 133-date 2009 world tour—the seventh highest-grossing in the world—brought in more in box office receipts than Beyonce despite playing only a handful of dates in the U.S., and logged a run of sellouts of major arenas in Australia.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is closing its Wasted Space nightclub after two years of operation, a Hard Rock spokeswoman said today.

The nightlife and concert venue will close before spring 2011 to make room for a new race and sports book, Hard Rock spokeswoman Jessie Pound said.

Pound said there isn’t an immediate timeline on when Wasted Space will close, but acts are booked at the venue through October.

Branded as Hard Rock’s “anti-club,” Wasted Space opened in July 2008 with the idea of a looser dress code than other nightclubs in town and a place for performers to play more intimate shows. The 5,000-square-foot club holds between 400 and 500 people.

Wasted Space was designed by motocross star Carey Hart, who also operates Hart and Huntington Tattoo Company inside Hard Rock. The club brought in some high-profile investors, including musicians Joel and Benji Madden and baseball star Jason Giambi. Giambi is also a co-owner in Vanity nightclub at Hard Rock.

Hard Rock Chief Executive Joseph Magliarditi said he wouldn’t comment on the closure of Wasted Space or the financial performance of the nightclub because the club is a partnership between Hart and Hard Rock.

According to an annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in March, Hard Rock said revenue at Wasted Space increased by $1.6 million in 2009, although other numbers for the club weren’t listed in the filing.

The venue’s opening night brought Gavin Rossdale and super group Camp Freddy and continued on to host names like MXPX, Snow Patrol and Hart’s wife, Pink. Acts left on Wasted Space’s upcoming roster include Drowning Pool, Hot Hot Heat and Adler’s Appetite.

In announcing changes with its race and sports book, Hard Rock also said today it has signed a deal with Cantor Gaming to operate the property’s sports book.

Pending regulatory approval, Cantor will install its in-running mobile gaming technology at the Hard Rock sports book. Hard Rock signed a deal with Cantor in February to become the third Las Vegas casino to offer Cantor’s eDeck mobile gaming technology. M Resort and Venetian both have the technology.

Pink has described Eminem as “one of the most poetic” and comical artists in the entertainment industry.

The singer, who collaborated with the rap superstar on his Recovery track ‘Won’t Back Down’, also revealed how surprised she was to have been spared from the rapper’s past feuds with popstars.

Speaking to Spin, she said: “I think he’s one of the most poetic, ballsy and hilarious people this industry has ever seen.

“I was always afraid he’d pick me as a target, but he’s always been nice to me and finally approached me to be on the album, so I must have done something right.”

Last month, Eminem praised Pink’s talent on their new song together.

Pink moved a total of 3 million concert tickets on her 2009-2010 worldwide tour, according to a statement on behalf of U.K. tour promoter Marshall Arts.

The artist stepped up to become a major global touring act in 2010. Indeed, she is one of the few to graduate to that stadium level in recent years on a global scale, along with Kings of Leon and Muse.

The Funhouse tour, including a headline slot at London’s Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, wrapped last month with a festival date in Norway. Pink is the only female artist to sell out stadium shows this year according to the statement.

In 2009, the Funhouse arena tour played to 2 million people. The 2010 Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour featured 34 stadium and festival headline dates and reached 14 countries in 12 weeks. That run added another 1 million tickets to the tour.

The 2010 stadium shows offered even more in the way of aerial stunts and acrobatics, including Pink’s entry from 100 feet up on a crane.

Pink also worked with international promoters including Michael Coppel in Australia, Peter Reiger of PRG in Germany, Tor Nielson of Live Nation Sweden, John Giddings of Solo (Isle of Wight Festival), Steve Homer of Live Nation in the U.K. and Randy Phillips at AEG.

“Pink is truly the next generation of stadium artistes and Sweden’s biggest stadium act this year,” said Nielson in the statement.

Homer added that she was “the first solo female artist to headline Wireless” and will be “a tough act to follow next year.”
