So, Pink (or is it P!nk?) released her greatest hits album recently and as I was looking through the track list it hit me: I pretty much love all of her songs. Yet for some reason I’ve never actually bought any of her albums.
How could this be? How could I, a self-professed music junkie, not have invested in someone who is such a genuine, bold and consistent pop star? Someone who has had a solid 10-year career?
Then I realized that Pink is perhaps one of the most underrated artists of our time.
She emerged onto the pop scene back in 2000, at the same time as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But, there was something different about her from the get-go.
While Britney played the “not that innocent” vixen and Christina was singing about what a girl wants, Pink was defiantly calling out all of the BS that men put girls through. There were no sweet love songs. Pink was a no-nonsense chick who would not put up with silly boys and their head games.
While Britney lost her marbles and Christina’s career went off the tracks, Pink flew just below the radar, shedding her pop girl image and doing something that not many female singers have the liberty to do in the music biz. She dared to be herself and to voice her opinions.
Over the years, she’s been very vocal in her support of animal rights and gay rights among many other political issues and she is all about empowering young women. She isn’t afraid to make fun of her celebrity frenemies. “Stupid Girls” is probably my favourite video simply because of her parody of Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson.
Maybe that’s why she hasn’t been the most popular kid on the music block. She’s not conventionally “sexy” (whatever that means), and she dares to speak about unpopular causes and not everyone is comfortable hearing what they don’t want to hear.
Instead of bending to the whim of what’s “cool”, Pink continues to march to the beat of her own drum. It’s her genuine attitude that has allowed her to navigate the weird world of the music industry without falling flat on her face. She is one tough act.
While many new artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha are jumping on the “it’s cool to be different” bandwagon, Pink’s been the living example of that since the start of her career. She is the original outsider and she’s proud of it.
So, I think it’s time I finally put my money where my mouth is and buy her Greatest Hits… So Far. Raise your glass to our favourite pop misfit.
