PINK cemented her dominance of the Australian music scene winning a prestigious Helpmann Award for best international concert last night.

The popular singer, who performed a record 17 concerts at Rod Laver Arena last year, trumped stiff competition from AC/DC, Beyonce and George Michael to take the award, announced at the Sydney Opera House.

More than 40 Helpmann Awards – Australia’s highest honour for live entertainment – were handed out at the gala event, hosted by crooner David Campbell.

Tex Perkins was named best Australian contemporary concert for his show, The Man in Black, The Johnny Cash Story.

Wil Anderson was named best comedy performer, and Jersey Boys won best musical.

Melbourne performers will be flying home on Tuesday with many awards, after cleaning up the theatre categories.

The Melbourne Theatre Company won six awards, including best play, best direction of a play (Simon Phillips) and best actor in a play (Ewen Leslie) for Richard III.

Other big winners were the Bangarra Dance Theatre with three awards, Opera Australia with seven, and the musical, Avenue Q,with five.

In a surprising upset, Avenue Q’s Mitchell Butel beat Geoffrey Rush (for the MTC) and Jersey Boy Bobby Fox to win best male actor in a musical.

Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre is celebrating a win with Julie Forsyth picking up the award for best female actor in a play for her role in Happy Days.

The cream of Australia’s performing arts community was among the 1500 to attend the industry-voted awards, now in their 10th year.

“It’s a fabulous night,” Helpmann Awards CEO Evelyn Richardson said.

“It’s the one night of the year where the industry comes together and celebrates its achievements and recognises the best of our talent.

“People value the Helpmanns and covet them. It’s a really prestigious thing to win.

“The intention when they were established in 2001 was to grow them to the pinnacle awards and over 10 years, we’ve achieved that,” she said.

Kevin Cochran performing at one of his live shows in California (Mammoth Lakes) when randomly out of the blue PINK joins him on stage to perform Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry”. Audio is shaky for the first 5 seconds then it mellows out.

Written on US4PINK facebook from Kevin:
“LOL… So you guys are the ones responsible for my video getting 2000 hits in 36 hours :) Needless to say this was a memorable experience and really glad it was mostly captured on video… Alecia was super down to earth and one of the cool…est people I’ve ever met… Carey was there also, and if you listen to the video in the background you can hear him telling her to “sing into the mic”…

wish we had a better camera and my guitar cable didn’t fall out, but that makes the video and moment that much more unique…. Anyway, hope you all enjoyed and if you like, come over to my music page and become a fan!!! http://www.facebook.com/KevinCochranMusic

Before she got the party started Saturday night, pop star Pink had her eye on Niagara Falls.

“It’s my second time here,” said one of the top-selling female singers of the past decade. “I went on the Maid of the Mist last time. I was considering the barrel this time.”

With hits like So What and Trouble, the 30-year-old Pink — real name, Alecia Moore — was in town for the grand opening of husband Carey Hart’s first Canadian location of his Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. chain. The couple were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered at a VIP reception at Margaritaville.

Best known as a motocross star and cast member of The Surreal Life, Hart opened his first tattoo shop with former business partner John Huntington in 2004 at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. The shop was the subject of the A&E reality show Inked.

He has been married to Pink since 2006.

The red carpet event was attended by tattoo artists, Inked stars and the pop band Stereos, but it was Pink most people were waiting for. Though she wasn’t scheduled to perform or sign autographs, several fans crammed Margaritaville — and even got drenched by the rain outside — just for a glimpse.

After some brief interviews with the media, including The Niagara Falls Review, ET Canada and MuchMusic, she was quickly whisked upstairs for the VIP party, where a huge section was roped off from the public.

Several people thought their VIP ticket, which cost $125 each, would get them a chance to meet the singer, but security (including some Niagara Regional Police officers) ensured no one got near her.

“I’m not really a Pink fan … but with the price of the ticket, we thought we’d have access other people wouldn’t,” said local publicist Chris Dabrowski, who wanted to pitch the singer an idea involving a charitable sponsorship. He ended up writing the proposal on a piece of paper for staff to hand to her.

Welland’s Mike Alfieri, co-owner of the Fallsview Boulevard shop, was thrilled to have Pink in the house, but admits the extra security added unwanted stress to the event. He apologized to several fans who expected to meet her.

“She came here to support her husband,” he said. “It’s good, but look at all the people … I had to break off that VIP area.

“Other than that, we had a killer day today. This was probably one of their best grand openings.”

Even one of Alfieri’s relatives was kept behind the rope, at least 30 feet away from Hart and Pink.

“I just want to get a picture of them both,” she said.

The grand opening was a day-long event, with a portion of Fallsview Boulevard closed to accommodate skateboard and motocross ramps. After the ribbon- cutting at noon, Hart signed autographs for hundreds of fans inside the posh tattoo shop.

“Here we are about eight months after this whole thing started,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

Pink, injured during a concert in Germany last month when she slammed into a steel barricade, showed no ill effects during her Falls trip.

“I’m good … though (Carey) doesn’t give me much sympathy,” she said with a laugh.

“She takes it like a champ,” added Hart.

American audiences may think of Pink mainly as the singer who sang upside down while hanging from the ceiling at the Grammy’s, but the 30-year-old pop singer is a major hit overseas. Her 133-date 2009 world tour—the seventh highest-grossing in the world—brought in more in box office receipts than Beyonce despite playing only a handful of dates in the U.S., and logged a run of sellouts of major arenas in Australia.
