Jazz icon Herbie Hancock has rounded up another all-star cast for the multimedia follow-up to his Grammy-winning tribute to Joni Mitchell.
“The Imagine Project” aims to unite “a myriad of cultures through song and positive creative expression,” according to a statement. Collaborators include pop singer Pink, guitarist Jeff Beck, sitarist Anoushka Shankar, Irish folk group the Chieftains and Colombian rocker Juanes.
The self-financed album will be released on June 22 through the pianist’s own Hancock Records label, and will be promoted with what a spokeswoman called an “extensive” world tour. Dates are already set for New York’s Carnegie Hall on June 24 and the Hollywood Bowl on September 1.
Hancock racked up some serious frequent-flier mileage in an attempt to record each song in the home country of his collaborator. Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney (”Taxi To The Dark Side”) came along for the ride, shooting footage for potential online and feature exhibition.
He traveled to Mumbai for the Shankar track “The Song Goes On,” which also features R&B singer Chaka Khan, jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter and a group of Indian musicians.
Hancock and Shorter reunited in London to record a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up” with Beck, Pink and Seal. Other stops included Paris for sessions with Beck and African musicians Tinariwen, Oumou Sangare, Lionel Louke and Kinono No. 1; Dublin with the Chieftains; Miami with Juanes; and Sao Paulo with Brazilian singer Ceu.
Rocker Dave Matthews, and married blues guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi were also recruited.
Hancock, who turns 70 in April, was the surprise winner of the album of the year Grammy in 2008 for “River: The Joni Letters,” a relatively unheralded release whose roster included Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, and Shankar’s half-sister Norah Jones.
15) Miley Cyrus - $21,285,996 14) Elton John - $22,141,315 13) Beyonce - $23,658,131 12) Nickelback - $23,674,124 11) Fleetwood Mac - $24,751,540 10) Metallica - $25,564,234 9) Kenny Chesney - $26,581,141 8) Coldplay - $27,326,562 7) Jonas Brothers - $33,596,576
6) Pink
$36,347,658
Even before she lofted herself onto a trapeze at the MTV Video Music Awards, Pink was already having the best year of her career. She officially shook her underdog status in 2008 with the release of “Funhouse,” but 2009 vaulted her to new heights thanks in part to an international arena tour, which netted her $35 million. Moreover, Pink’s show-stopping 2010 Grammy Awards performance of “Glitter in the Air” — and the track’s subsequent 1,143% digital sales increase — means that her funhouse is still open for business.
5) Britney Spears - $38,885,267 4) AC/DC - $43,650,466 3) Madonna - $47,237,774 2) Bruce Springsteen - $57,619,037 1) U2 - $108,601,283
Pink’s tweet: @butchwalker ’s show last night at hotel cafe was magical. he can put on a show. i wanna be that good one day.
“One of many highlights of the show was when P!nk joined Walker to sing “Here Comes The. . .” off of Walker’s previous album Sycamore Meadows. Now, P!nk may write very catchy pop songs, but the woman ROCKS. I’ve never actually been to one of P!nk’s concerts, but I have seen her jump on stage with Walker a few times. And every time I see her, I like her even more than the last. Like Walker, Alecia Moore (aka P!nk) is genuinely, 100%, who she is. And she is fuckin’ awesome. When they finished the song and Moore walked off stage, Walker began, “That was. . . ” and then looking at his long-time friend, Moore, said with a chuckle, “YOU!” The audience laughed. “It just feels so weird to say, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen – PINK!’” Walker added.”
Pink twetted: I am verrrrrry excited about @butchwalker ’s album coming out tomorrow!!!! one for the house, one for the car….. yaye!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Butch release his new album, “I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart”, today. It will be released under the name Butch Walker & the Black Widows. Butch will support the record with a tour with Train in March, then a headlining tour of the States. He will then be opening for Pink in Europe on her Stadium Festival Tour.
Though he’s been a first-call songwriter and producer for artists ranging from Fall Out Boy to Weezer to Pink to Dashboard Confessional for some time, Butch Walker has never had more to write about than he does right now. In recent years he has witnessed the birth of his first child, lost his home (and recording masters) to Malibu wildfires, and turned 40. Appropriately then, Butch’s new album I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart is about beginnings, endings, and the long journey in between. The album, featuring eleven new songs co-written by Walker and his songwriting partner Michael Trent, will be released on cd and digitally on February 23, 2010.
